For World AIDS Day we would like to share the stor

For World AIDS Day we would like to share the story of Tom, a Music Therapy participant at the Dr.Peter Centre, a facility dedicated to care for people with HIV.

Tom dreamed of playing guitar since he was a young boy. He listened to his brother play and secretly strummed the guitar when his brother wasn’t around, hoping one day it would be his turn. Tom’s story isn’t unique in that he survived the early HIV days, with great uncertainty, nearly giving up on life and holding back on his dreams. Over time, he gained a wealth of knowledge in many areas of life and working with his hands, buying a guitar at one time that sat in its case, waiting to be played. Tom lived in the West End for years and knew about the Dr. Peter Centre but didn’t enter the doors, unsure of what was on offer for him on the other side.

Luckily, another participant encouraged Tom to join the Day Health Program in late 2023 and introduced him to the therapies available 7 days per week. Tom knew right away he wanted to dust off his guitar and finally give himself the opportunity to learn. That was only 5 months ago. In that time, Tom’s determination and passion to “make up for lost time” has come with consistent, weekly sessions and a lot of at-home practice, resulting in being able to play several songs and inspire others that it’s never too late to try.

Tom has expressed his gratitude for the availability of Music Therapy and the time set aside for him to engage every week to keep his guitar journey moving forward.

“The music therapy program is so important to me

“The music therapy program is so important to me because it has given me an outlet. When life at home is challenging, I can play guitar, or when I get to school, I can play guitar, and it is helpful. It has helped me connect with the students around me because music brings people together. Guitar makes me feel like myself. Since elementary school I have experienced terrible anxiety and guitar really helps me manage that. I love music so much and it is awesome to have it available at school to learn it. It also helped me get to other classes and I am making a guitar in woodworking right now! “

The Rhythm & Word program at Mountainside Secondary School provides Music Therapy to 30 students. The program works with a diverse demographic of teens from different economic and cultural backgrounds and provides additional support to students in their education who may be dealing with multiple challenges and disadvantages. All students at this specialized school are recognized as At-Risk Youth.
