“At Lumara Grief & Bereavement Care Society, the youth retreat hosts 50–60 youth ages 13–25 who have experienced significant loss. The Saturday night campfire has long been a tradition at the retreat.⁠

At the campfire, staff were amazed at the level of engagement. Youth sang together, called out songs that transcended generation gaps, and some played guitars beside me, learning chords and strumming patterns as we went. The variety of songs made room for many moods and emotions. Leaders rose up around the circle, singing more strongly the songs that had personal meaning for them and the loved ones they were remembering.⁠

As a music therapist, it was the highlight for me to see the music animating them, connecting them, lightening the loads they carried. Even the shyest youth quietly mouthed lyrics, held by the music and their peers, re-stitching feelings of belonging that grief had taken away.⁠

The following year, many youth asked for another campfire. This time, several were ready to lead songs themselves. Engagement was again extraordinary. At YMCA’s Nanook Childcare Centre, four-year-old

At YMCA’s Nanook Childcare Centre, four-year-old Benny struggled with big emotions that often led to outbursts or withdrawal. Coming from a family facing housing challenges and past trauma, group settings were especially difficult.⁠
⁠
When Benny joined Music Therapy, things began to shift. In small group sessions, they were encouraged to sing, move, and explore instruments freely. Music became a safe way to express feelings, release frustration, and connect with others. Music Therapist Alexina gently wove Benny’s emotions into each session, helping them recognize and regulate their feelings through rhythm and song.⁠

Soon, Benny began to look forward to music each week—singing outside of sessions, using songs to calm during transitions, and sharing new tunes with family at home. Through Music Therapy, Benny found joy, confidence, and connection—a safe space for healing and belonging.⁠
