Octopuses don’t have ears, so music reaches them through vibrations in the water.⁠
Their bodies, especially the arms, are covered with highly sensitive receptors that pick up:⁠
-frequency⁠
-vibration intensity⁠
-wave patterns⁠
⁠
In other words, they sense music with their entire body! 🎶🐙⁠

Two years ago, Jolo experienced an acquired brain

Two years ago, Jolo experienced an acquired brain injury that affected mobility on his left side. Despite the changes, one thing remains constant: his love for music and drumming.⁠
⁠
Through Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) at Strive Centre Vancouver, Jolo combines his passion for music with therapy that supports movement, speech, and cognition. He attends weekly group and 1:1 sessions with Edwina.⁠
⁠
In the group sessions, Jolo joins others working on goals like attention, executive function, and emotional processing through music and songwriting. “The group is a safe space to share and find support,” he says.⁠
⁠
During 1:1 sessions, Jolo focuses on strengthening his left side and maintaining function on the right through Therapeutic Instrumental Playing — using percussion instruments to improve motor control. Activities like playing frame drums and the bass drum help increase range of motion and support walking.⁠
⁠
“Music therapy has been helpful with moving my arms,” Jolo shares. He enjoys choosing songs for his exercises and feels empowered through the process. Drumming also holds deep meaning for him, reminding him of “fond memories of playing with my older brother in a band.”⁠

Jolo looks forward to continuing NMT to further improve his motor function and keep making music that moves him forward.⁠
