Inside the Session: Beyond the Music We sat dow Inside the Session: Beyond the Music

We sat down with Marcel Levesque during our visit to the Music Therapy Program at the Dr. Peter Centre to talk about what music therapy means to him.

From songwriting and jam sessions to simply having a space to be heard, Marcel shares what coming to music therapy gives him that other spaces do not — and why programs like this matter.

At the Dr. Peter Centre, music therapy supports individuals living with HIV/AIDS through creative expression, connection, and trauma-informed care. For many participants navigating stigma, isolation, and healthcare barriers, this space offers more than music — it offers community, confidence, and emotional resilience.

Music impacts everyone.
Access changes everything.

“L is a young Indigenous adult with a deep passion “L is a young Indigenous adult with a deep passion for singing and dancing. Living with borderline personality disorder and the responsibilities of being a busy mother, she found that music—a once-vital part of her life—gradually faded into the background amidst daily challenges.

After being referred to one-on-one music therapy by her nurse at Kelowna General Hospital, L began engaging in sessions focused on
emotional regulation, coping strategies, and meaningful self-expression.

Through the support of music therapy, she explored the emotions connected to specific songs and discovered how music could be a
powerful tool for supporting her mental health.

During music therapy, L rediscovered her love of music by singing many of her favorite songs. She revealed that, despite years of struggling with low confidence, simply singing with someone else in the room
helped her feel seen and supported, sparking a new sense of courage and self-belief.

As part of her journey to reconnect with her culture, L also expressed interest in playing the drum. This experience
had a significant emotional impact. After playing, she shared, “I feel like I want to cry. I’ve been feeling so lost. I finally have a tool to help me.”

The Power of Music, Everywhere. We’re sitting d The Power of Music, Everywhere.

We’re sitting down with Sam, Managing Partner at @parksidebrewery to talk about why this partnership with Music Heals matters — and why supporting music therapy is something Parkside believes in.

For every pint of Dusk Pale Ale and Motel Hazy Pale Ale sold in March, $1 helps fund Music Heals’ music therapy programs.

For Parkside, community isn’t just a word — it’s who gathers around the table, who shows up for one another, and who believes local businesses can play a role in supporting mental health and wellbeing.

When community shows up, access becomes possible.
