Ben, an 80-year-old stroke survivor and retired zo

Ben, an 80-year-old stroke survivor and retired zoologist, spent most of his life with a deep love for folk music and had always been a guitar player before his stroke. After suffering a major stroke, he lost much of his speech and confidence. He spent his early days in care at Broadway Lodge, mostly isolated, rarely leaving his room or participating in group sessions or activities. ⁠
⁠
With gentle encouragement and the support of the music therapy program, Ben slowly began to engage. Through group sessions focused on vocal rehabilitation and songwriting, he gradually found his voice again, both literally and emotionally. With his therapist’s help, Ben wrote an original song reflecting his journey through recovery. He also relearned to play guitar using an assistive hand tool, allowing him to strum and accompany himself during sessions. ⁠

At a recent talent show, years after his stroke, Ben performed his song a cappella before a full audience. He took the opportunity to explain the benefits and the self-expression that music therapy had brought him, and to thank the three music therapists he had worked with throughout his journey. ⁠

Today, Ben is an essential part of the music therapy community, often inspiring others to participate with his story, his music, and his quiet encouragement. His journey is a testament to the lasting impact of music therapy on healing, creativity, and connection.⁠
