With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our Music Heals Founder and Board President, David Barnett

David built Music Heals from a deep belief in the power of music to comfort, connect, and heal. Music was not just something he loved; it was how he brought people together. Whether through a shared song, a moment of listening, or an act of service, he had a rare ability to make everyone feel seen and welcome.

His kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others shaped this organization and touched countless lives. The impact of his vision will continue to be felt through every note, every session, and every person we provide with music therapy.

We are profoundly grateful for his leadership, his heart, and the legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time, and we will honour him by carrying his mission forward.

A Message from Executive Director, Juliana Fraser

As I reflect on the challenges of the past year, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to champion the mission of Music Heals.

I am honoured to share our 2025 Impact Report showcasing the incredible power of music for people’s physical and mental health.

This past year, we visited three facilities and captured videos of the unique ways in which music creates connection; from parents with tiny babies in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), to youth in high school, to seniors with dementia.

Music can be a tool for support and stress relief in the most challenging of times. Music therapy is helping to reduce isolation, bolster spirits, and nurture connection. In the midst of grief, joy, calm and chaos, music creates a sense of belonging for people when they need it most.

The vision of our Founder, David Barnett, and our mission at Music Heals, is to make music therapy available to everyone who needs it by raising funds for music therapy programs for people of all ages, all across the province. Thank you to everyone who has joined us on our mission and for your support in continuing David's mission.

Sincerely,

Juliana Fraser

Music Therapy Impact Stories 2025

Surrey Memorial Hospital - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Music Therapy for babies born prematurely and their families

  • With support from Music Heals, Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provided music therapy services to 158 patients in 2025.

NICU music therapy provides family education, supports bonding through live music, and offers emotional care for parents. Therapists create personalized songs, provide lullaby recordings, and offer individualized infant sessions using gentle singing and musical play. They follow up with families and share guidance for early development. As a non-invasive intervention, music therapy promotes healing, connection, and hope during the NICU stay.

Mountainside Secondary School, Rhythm & Word Music Therapy Program

Music Therapy program within alternative education for youth

  • With Music Heals funding, Mountainside Secondary School alongside North Van Arts provided the Rhythm & Word program consistently for 3 days per week throughout each school term in 2025.

“I’ve made lots of friends in the music room and it helps my anxiety and is an outlet for me to let out my emotions. I have OCD and playing music helps me regulate my emotions. I feel fortunate to have the ability to play music at school. I have struggled with addiction in my life and during rough times like that it was hard to come to school but what kept me coming and afloat was music. Now I’m graduating this year, and music will always be something I remember, it has impacted me in so many ways and is something I can take with me for the rest of my life.” Chloe T, Student at Mountainside Secondary School

Louis Brier Home & Hospital

The Louis Brier Home and Hospital is home to 215 residents between the ages of 43-105. All residents have access to music therapy group sessions and one-to-one sessions as needed.

  • With support from Music Heals, 225 music therapy sessions were provided to 118 children across 4 childcare centres in 2024.

“I want to thank you for singing with me and bringing me here. I had such a nice time.” – Resident of Louis Brier Home & Hospital

Strive Living Society

Music therapy program for adults with developmental delays and disabilities

  • With the support of funding from Music Heals in 2025, the music therapy program benefited 35 clients, with 15 clients participating in one-on-one sessions and 20 individuals engaged in group therapy.

Jolo, a passionate drummer, sustained an acquired brain injury two years ago that affected mobility on his left side. Through Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) at Strive Centre, he continues to channel his love for music while improving physical and cognitive abilities. In group and individual sessions, Jolo engages in therapeutic drumming and music-based exercises that strengthen his affected side, enhance attention, and support emotional well-being. Music therapy not only aids his physical recovery but also empowers him to express himself and reconnect with cherished memories of playing alongside his brother. His journey highlights music’s powerful role in healing and resilience.

Broadway Lodge

Music therapy program for seniors and long-term care

  • In 2025, Music Heals funding supported the music therapy program at Broadway Lodge, which was available to all 114 long-term care residents.

Ben, an 80-year-old stroke survivor and retired zoologist, rediscovered his voice and confidence through music therapy. Once isolated and withdrawn after losing much of his speech, Ben slowly re-engaged through group sessions focused on vocal rehabilitation and songwriting. With his therapist’s support, he wrote an original song about his recovery and relearned to play guitar using an assistive tool. Years later, he performed his song a cappella before an audience, expressing gratitude to his therapists and sharing how music therapy transformed his life. Now a beloved member of the music therapy community, Ben inspires others through his resilience, creativity, and compassion.

BC Children’s Hospital

Music therapy program for children undergoing treatment and surgeries

  • Music Heals support in 2025 enabled music therapy one day per week for approximately 11 months, meaning 282 kids, teens and families benefitted from the program.

“Our experience with music therapy has truly been incredible and it’s something we genuinely look forward to,” Caity continued. “Bensyn loves listening to the guitar and ‘singing’ along with the music in his own little way. One moment that stands out was when Clara went out of her way to learn one of Bensyn’s special songs on guitar, just for him. It was such a sweet gesture, and it made those visits feel even more meaningful.”

Dr Peter Centre

Music therapy program and care for people with HIV

  • Music Heals funding in 2025 enabled the Centre to employ three Music Therapists to support participants this year. This additional therapist supported expanded access to one-on-one sessions throughout the year.

“Without the Music Therapy Program, I probably would not have stayed as together as I am now… the music heals it.”

Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living

Music therapy program and services for people with disabilities and families

  • With Music Heals support in 2025, 79 individuals were supported on a regular basis: 54 adults, 5 youth and 20 children. Music therapy also became available to an additional 50 people on a 1-time basis.

“As an agency we continue to be impressed and amazed at the value that music therapy brings to our many participants and their families. The overwhelming response from people is truly inspiring and much of it reflects how positive people feel about the therapeutic modality but also about the breadth of skill and knowledge that Birgit Giesser brings to the program. Music therapy and Birgit have become an integral part of our service delivery; they have provided immeasurable benefits not only to persons served but for individual families and extended support teams. We are immensely grateful to Music Heals donors and corporate sponsors … thank you, thank you!”
Margaret Ickert, Lead, Community & Employment Services, RMACL

St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care

Music therapy program for palliative / hospice care

  • With Music Heals funding in 2025,  dedicated Music Therapist, Joshua Denny-Keys, was able to continue offering 21 hours of music therapy each week to patients receiving palliative care.

“She paused. Her furrowed brow relaxed, and in a soft tone she said, “That would be nice. Do you know ‘My Way’?” She invited me to play the song for her. She listened intently—sometimes closing her eyes, sometimes mouthing the lyrics along with me. At the conclusion of the song, she said, “That was so wonderful. Thank you. That’s all I needed."

Rotary Centre for the Arts Kelowna

Community music therapy for youth and adults with diverse abilities, including developmental and physical disabilities

  • With funding support from Music Heals in 2025, 95 participants were served for the Winter Series of Sing for the Soul and 49 participants for the Spring Series

"This type of activity seems to have a wonderful power to elevate our mood, not just during the session, but for many days after, as the music remained in our heads and we enjoyed practicing."

YMCA BC

Music Therapy and programs for children in the DTES community

  • In 2025, Music Therapy continued to play a uniquely powerful role in meeting the needs of the children at YMCA by offering a highly responsive, small-group approach.

“Through Music Therapy, Benny found not only a safe space for healing but also a bridge to community and belonging. For a young child carrying the weight of anxiety and trauma, music became both an outlet and a tool for resilience.”

Cumberland Lodge

Music Therapy for long-term care

  • Cumberland Lodge is home to 60 residents, and the Music Therapy program is designed to reach every one of them, including one-to-one sessions, small group work, and larger group gatherings of 8 or more participants.

Taking music outside provided residents with fresh air, sunlight, and a change of environment, enhancing both their physical and emotional well-being while keeping residents actively engaged.

Mount Saint Joseph

Music Therapy program for long-term care

  • With the support of Music Heals in 2025, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital was able to introduce music therapy for the first time to its inpatient setting on both the geriatric psychiatry (1 South), and acute care for older adults (4 East) units.

“Eva, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful job you’re doing at the geriatric/dementia ward at Mt. St. Joseph hospital. We look forward to the sessions on Friday. It's so encouraging to watch the patients “waking up” when the music starts, you can see on their faces how much they’re enjoying themselves. This program is much needed and a definite asset to the hospital. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for bringing so much joy to my husband and the other patients.” Clara Marino, Music Therapy Participant

Kinghaven Peardonville House Society

Music therapy program for addiction recovery for men and women and services for their families

  • With Music Heals funding, the music therapist added bi-weekly sessions to the daycare located within Peardonville House. Residents who are mothers can bring their under school aged children to Peardonville House for the duration of their stay.

Many of the children have not had experience in daycare at all, and oftentimes not interacted with a music therapist. With these many new beginnings, the music therapist strives to create an inviting and safe environment for all of the children coming through, utilising simple and calming melodies, improvisation on instruments, and movement.
